In 1947, Roy Lomison and Oscar Weaver set out on a mission for a plot of land to build a Christian camp of their own to better serve Christian churches in the area. On April 28th, Roy and Oscar, along with four others, purchased 125 acres of cow pasture and wooded hillside for $300. Little did they know the overwhelming impact that this tract of land littered with cow patties and critters would have on the lives of countless young people, serving as a catalyst to grow deeper in their relationship with God.
Sylvan Hills has come a long way from tents and outhouses, but our camping ministry continues to have a direct, immeasurable impact on our youth today. Even through unprecedented times, God has blessed us beyond measure. Our 2020 virtual summer programs reached 1,143 campers across 34 states and 10 countries! As the year draws to a close, we are dreaming of what the next 75 years of Christian camp ministry might look like and how we can deliver a vibrant, effective camp facility to the next generation.
To celebrate our upcoming “Diamond Anniversary” in 2022 we are excited to announce our 75th Diamond Anniversary Campaign, designed to position Sylvan Hills for the next 75 years. The centerpiece of this campaign will be an all-season lodge that will replace the aging Boys Cabins. This new, winterized lodge will act as a multifunctional facility for our summer camps and retreat groups year-round. Unlike the plot of land purchased in April 1947, the new lodge will cost a little more than $300. The financial goal of our campaign is $750,000 over the next 5 years, with construction set to start following the 2021 summer camp season.
Will you prayerfully consider partnering with Sylvan Hills to impact the next generation of campers? No amount is too small to help better serve our campers, our community, and our God. Together we can continue the tradition of spreading the love of Jesus Christ and changing lives.
